Join our Hern Ennorath Catch-up - Thursday 21 March

Dear fellow travelers in Middle-earth,

On Thursday 21st March join with your Tolkien fan friends from around Australia, New Zealand for an enjoyable evening of sharing, learning and discussion.

We will start the meeting with some time to get to know you and your latest Middle-earth adventures. Perhaps you have an interesting mathom to share?

We will then be learning about, Howard Shore: Defining Middle Earth

Howard Shore’s music in the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit movies had a huge impact on the world with recognisable musical themes that were so engaging that audiences would be leaving cinemas continuing to hum the tunes. Howard won the academy award for best score for FOTR and ROTK. There are regular concert performances all over the world for screenings of the movies, there is a Lord of the Rings Symphony and the music and the style of music has seeped into the public consciousness. Howard Shore’s scores now form the blueprint for many other adaptations and in a way, he has defined what music in Middle-earth sounds like. In my session I will take you through only some of the leitmotifs that Shore wrote for LOTR and the Hobbit movies (a leitmotif is a recurrent theme throughout a musical or literary composition, associated with a particular person, idea, or situation) as there is nowhere near enough time in one session. I will show how Howard presents and develops theme, some little-known facts about the scores as well as some of my own thoughts about the development of themes, their use and interpretation in LOTR and how leitmotifs were extended with the release of the Hobbit movies and sometimes given new meaning.

We look forward to an enjoyable and interesting evening together.
